A payment of $26,000 has been made to the Ghana Police Service on behalf of the suspended Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. The transaction is linked to an ongoing investigation into a visa racketeering scandal involving applications for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While the total amount involved in the allegations is reportedly $56,000, this specific payment was delivered to authorities by a close associate of the sports administrator with his prior approval.
The investigation focuses on allegations that the suspended NSA head received commissions from over 180 individuals seeking visas for the upcoming tournament. Despite the payment, Ampofo Ankrah has denied any wrongdoing and maintains that he will be fully exonerated. His legal and personal representatives have indicated that the funds were provided to assist the police with their inquiries rather than as an admission of criminal liability.
In response to the growing scandal, President John Mahama has established a committee to investigate the matter and determine the extent of the alleged racketeering within the sports authority. The findings of this committee, alongside the ongoing police probe, are expected to decide the future of Ampofo Ankrah’s tenure at the NSA. For now, he remains under suspension as authorities work to resolve the case and address the potential impact on Ghana's participation in international sporting events.
