The Swiss Football Association (SFV) has officially cleared captain Granit Xhaka and striker Breel Embolo to return to the national team following an investigation into the acquisition of forged Covid-19 vaccination certificates. The decision marks the end of a period of exclusion for the two key players, who were found to have violated protocols regarding their vaccination status. As part of the disciplinary measures, both players have been handed a fine of 150,000 Swiss francs and a two-year conditional suspension, which will remain in place provided they commit no further offences during that period.
The investigation had significant consequences for the team's recent selection and performance on the pitch. Granit Xhaka was noticeably absent from the squad during the October international break, where he missed matches against Scotland, North Macedonia, and Slovenia. Similarly, Breel Embolo was excluded from the team's roster for the September fixtures. The SFV stated that they deemed the players' return to be a responsible move following the conclusion of the probe, balancing the necessity of institutional discipline with the players' professional contributions to the national setup.
With the disciplinary cloud now lifted, coach Murat Yakin is expected to include both Xhaka and Embolo in his final squad selection, which is scheduled to be announced by November 5. Their return comes at a critical time for the Swiss national team as they currently lead Group E in the Nations League. The presence of the veteran captain and the clinical forward will be viewed as a major boost as the side looks to maintain its position at the top of the table in the upcoming final round of matches.
