Wicknell Chivayo, a flamboyant and influential Zimbabwean businessman, has died alongside his wife, Lucy Muteke, and four others in a devastating helicopter crash in the Marondera district. The private aircraft went down on Wednesday evening, approximately 70 kilometers east of the capital, Harare. Government officials and family representatives confirmed that there were no survivors in the incident, which has sent shockwaves through Zimbabwe’s business and political establishment.
According to reports from state media and government spokesperson Nick Mangwana, the helicopter crashed shortly after taking off from Gandami in Chikomba, where the couple was reportedly constructing a rural residence. Upon impact near Kudenga Farm, the aircraft was engulfed in an intense fire, which emergency responders noted has significantly complicated the process of identifying the remains of the six occupants, including two pilots. Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed that investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the crash, with preliminary observations noting a fuel spill at the site.
At 43, Chivayo was the managing director of Intratrek Zimbabwe and a man known for his immense and often ostentatious wealth. He maintained close ties to the ruling Zanu-PF party and President Emmerson Mnangagwa, frequently making headlines for his lavish lifestyle and high-profile philanthropy, which included gifting luxury vehicles to various public figures. However, his business career was also the subject of intense scrutiny; he notably faced legal disputes and public criticism over a contested $172 million solar power project in Gwanda, though he consistently denied any wrongdoing regarding his government contracts.
The tragedy has prompted high-level tributes from across the region. President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed deep shock, highlighting Chivayo’s philanthropic efforts, while Kenyan President William Ruto paid tribute to the businessman as a "dear friend" who had a significant impact on the continent. While the nation mourns, the incident has also reignited public discourse regarding the vast wealth gap in Zimbabwe, as critics contrast Chivayo’s extravagant life with the economic struggles of the general populace. As authorities continue their investigation, the crash remains a major focal point of national attention.
