Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, the President of Breast Care International (BCI), has called on the media to strengthen their advocacy and partnerships to enhance breast cancer awareness across Ghana. Speaking during the 2026 Annual Walk for the Cure in Asante Mampong, Dr. Wiafe Addai emphasized that consistent public education is the most effective tool for encouraging early self-examinations and treatment, which are essential for reducing the high mortality rates associated with the disease.
The event, held under the theme "Our Walk, Our Fight, Our Future," drew a diverse crowd of participants, including health professionals, local leaders, and survivors. Dr. Wiafe Addai highlighted that many deaths could be prevented if patients sought medical attention at the first sign of unusual breast changes rather than waiting until the condition became advanced. She stressed that the media plays a pivotal role in disseminating accurate information that counters widespread misconceptions and myths surrounding the illness.
In addition to media collaboration, the BCI President urged men to actively participate in the fight against breast cancer by supporting their partners and encouraging regular screenings. Survivors at the walk shared their personal journeys to inspire hope among those currently battling the disease, underscoring the message that breast cancer is treatable if detected early. The event concluded with a call for sustained community health education and stronger corporate support for nationwide screening programs.
