Pupils from seven basic schools in the Weija-Gbawe municipality have been introduced to Project Ethics, a collaborative educational initiative between Ghana and Malta. The programme is designed to foster a culture of integrity and active citizenship among the youth, providing them with a moral framework to navigate an increasingly complex and rapidly changing global landscape. By focusing on foundational ethical education, the project seeks to empower the next generation to become accountable and principled members of society.
The initiative utilizes a modern pedagogical approach that integrates storytelling and digital tools with comprehensive teacher training. This combination is intended to make abstract ethical concepts more accessible and engaging for primary-level students. During the sensitization event, the High Commissioner of Malta to Ghana, Ronald Micallef, emphasized that ethical education is a necessity in the 21st-century classroom. He noted that as global societies face new technological and social challenges, students must be equipped with the critical thinking skills required to make principled decisions.
Beyond classroom lessons, Project Ethics encourages both educators and pupils to actively model and practice core values such as honesty, responsibility, and empathy. The project seeks to move beyond traditional rote learning by creating an environment where ethical behaviour is a practical part of the school culture. The training provided to teachers ensures they are well-equipped to guide their students through the development of a strong moral compass and to handle ethical dilemmas in a changing world.
This bilateral partnership reflects a shared commitment by the Ghanaian and Maltese governments to invest in character development as a pillar of national progress. As these seven pilot schools in Weija-Gbawe begin the implementation phase, the project serves as a potential blueprint for broader educational reforms focused on citizenship. The ultimate objective remains to cultivate a new generation of leaders who prioritize integrity and accountability in their contribution to national development.
