The Parliamentary Select Committee on Water and Sanitation has officially recognized the Volta Region as the cleanest region in Ghana following an extensive monitoring tour of sanitation and waste management facilities. During an assessment of regional infrastructure, Committee Chairman and Member of Parliament for Nkwanta North, John Oti Bless, lauded the region's superior cleanliness standards compared to other areas visited across the country. This recognition serves as a benchmark for national sanitation goals as the committee continues its evaluation of regional environmental health and waste processing capabilities.
A central highlight of the Committee's tour was the inspection of the Ho Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP). The facility is a cornerstone of the region's waste management strategy, possessing the capacity to process 600 metric tonnes of waste daily. By prioritizing recycling and resource recovery, IRECOP not only mitigates the environmental impact of refuse but also stimulates local economic activity through the production of compost and other recovered materials. The Committee noted that such integrated facilities are vital for modernizing Ghana's approach to the circular economy and environmental conservation.
Despite the praise for the Volta Region, Chairman John Oti Bless acknowledged that many other regions across the country continue to grapple with significant sanitation challenges. To bridge this gap, the Committee emphasized the critical role of public education and advocacy. Lawmakers urged media organizations to partner with local authorities to sensitize citizens on the importance of maintaining high hygiene standards, suggesting that infrastructural investment must be paired with consistent behavioral change to achieve lasting results.
Looking toward the future of national policy, the Select Committee reaffirmed its strong support for the proposed National Sanitation Authority Bill. The establishment of a dedicated authority is seen as a necessary step to harmonize sanitation governance and ensure consistent management standards across all regions. By institutionalizing these oversight mechanisms, the government aims to replicate the successes observed in the Volta Region on a national scale, fostering a cleaner and healthier environment for all Ghanaians.
