The Parliamentary Select Committee on Water and Sanitation has officially designated the Volta Region as the cleanest region it has assessed during its ongoing nationwide monitoring tour. Led by Committee Chairman John Oti Bless, the delegation praised the region's exceptional commitment to environmental hygiene and its proactive approach to waste management. This recognition follows a series of inspections designed to evaluate the effectiveness of sanitation facilities across the country and to identify regions that are setting high standards for public health and cleanliness.
A key highlight of the committee's visit was the inspection of the Ho Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP). The facility was commended for its capacity to process significant amounts of urban waste and its role in promoting resource recovery. By utilizing advanced recycling initiatives, the plant not only mitigates environmental pollution but also converts waste into valuable organic fertilizer, showcasing a sustainable model for waste management that the committee suggests should be replicated in other parts of the country.
While celebrating the region's achievements, John Oti Bless emphasized that maintaining this status requires continuous public education and robust institutional support. He urged local authorities to remain vigilant and called for the swift progression of the National Sanitation Authority Bill. This legislation is viewed by stakeholders as a vital step toward establishing a dedicated national body to manage sanitation challenges effectively, ensuring that the high standards observed in the Volta Region become the benchmark for the entire nation.
