The Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) has achieved a provisional profit of $1.3 million during the first nine months of 2023. This financial performance marks a significant turnaround for the state-owned smelter, which has faced a variety of operational and financial hurdles in recent years. Chief Executive Officer Dr. Robert Makila Sambian announced the results, highlighting the company's transition toward a more sustainable and profitable future under its current strategic direction.
According to the company's performance data, VALCO produced 30,000 tonnes of alumina by September 2023. To build on this momentum, Dr. Sambian outlined an ambitious ten-year strategic plan that aims to increase alumina processing capacity to 1.5 million tonnes. This massive expansion is projected to require an estimated $4 billion in investment, intended to modernise the facility and integrate it more deeply into Ghana's natural resource value chain through the Integrated Aluminium Industry project.
The CEO addressed the historical challenges that previously hindered the company's growth, specifically citing obsolete equipment and significant debt burdens. To resolve these issues, VALCO is currently implementing a five-year strategic plan focused on achieving operational excellence and attracting private capital. A key component of this industrialisation drive is the installation of a new rod mill, which is expected to support local manufacturing, reduce the need for imports, and create additional employment opportunities within the sector.
The Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources has underscored the importance of the progress made so far, emphasizing that accountability and transparency remain central to the government's industrial agenda. As VALCO seeks to secure the necessary private partnerships for its $4 billion expansion, the current profit serves as a proof of concept for the viability of the smelter's long-term operations and its role in Ghana’s economic diversification strategy.
