The Upper West Regional Chief Imam Educational Endowment Fund has disbursed GH₵138,536 to support 61 financially disadvantaged tertiary students for the 2026/27 academic year. This initiative, which specifically targets students from the Upper West Region, aims to reduce the financial burden on families and ensure that academic potential is not hindered by economic hardship. The latest disbursement marks a significant expansion of the scheme, reflecting a 38.64% increase in the number of beneficiaries compared to the previous academic cycle.
Dr. Saeed Moomin, the Secretary to the Fund, noted that the board receives a continuous stream of requests for assistance, highlighting the deep financial challenges faced by many families in the region. Since its establishment in October 2022, the fund has operated on a merit-and-need basis, strictly evaluating applicants based on their academic performance and verified financial vulnerability. During the presentation of the funds, stakeholders encouraged the recipients to remain diligent in their studies, emphasizing that their academic success is the primary return on this communal investment.
Beneficiaries of the fund expressed profound gratitude for the support, describing the allocation as a vital lifeline for their continued education. Many noted that without such interventions, completing their tertiary programs would be nearly impossible due to rising costs. The fund’s leadership also urged former beneficiaries and other well-meaning citizens to contribute back to the endowment in the future to ensure its long-term sustainability. By focusing on higher education, the fund seeks to create a cycle of empowerment and professional development intended to combat poverty within the Upper West Region.
