Students at the University of Ghana, organized under the Concerned Students’ Movement, are preparing for a demonstration against a 26% increase in accommodation fees. The hike, implemented by University of Ghana Enterprise Limited (UGEL), has sparked widespread anger as some hostel rates have surged to approximately GH₵8,000 per academic year. The protest, scheduled for November 2, aims to demand transparency in the fee-setting process and an immediate reversal of the price increment.
Ishmael Oduro-Acheampong, a representative of the student group, noted that accommodation costs have risen dramatically in a short period, climbing from between GH₵3,000 and GH₵4,000 to the current GH₵8,000 level in just two semesters. Beyond the financial burden, students are calling for refunds for those who have already paid the increased rates and are demanding a more transparent fee-setting process. They have also expressed dissatisfaction with the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC), seeking greater accountability from student leaders in addressing these welfare issues.
In response to the planned agitation, university management has urged the students to suspend their demonstration following initial discussions. The Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Rosina Kyerematen, issued a notice affirming management's commitment to addressing student needs through established grievance procedures and ongoing dialogue. The university emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful learning environment while coordinating with various units to support student welfare.
However, the university faces external pressure from the Rent Commission, which has taken a firm stance against the price surge. Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Kupuku has warned the institution to suspend the fee increase or face legal action, asserting that no institution is above the law. The commission is currently seeking legal advice to potentially secure an injunction against the increment. The outcome of this confrontation will likely determine the future of accommodation costs for thousands of students currently grappling with the commercialization of campus housing.
