UNICEF Reports Over 300 Child Deaths as Ebola Outbreak Ravages Democratic Republic of Congo

DR Congo officials demand accounting for $700m in missing Ebola aid

Public health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Africa’s premier public health agency have expressed deep concern over approximately $700 million in Ebola aid that remains unaccounted for. The demand for financial transparency comes as a major outbreak of the virus continues to escalate, having already spread to eight provinces within the DRC. The situation has taken on a regional dimension, with health authorities confirming that the virus has now crossed borders into neighboring Uganda and Kenya, heightening the urgency for a coordinated and well-funded response. The missing funds have prompted calls for international aid organizations to provide comprehensive financial reports. Officials are seeking clarity on how the substantial resources, intended to curb the spread of the deadly hemorrhagic fever, were managed. This push for accountability reflects growing frustration among local authorities and health leaders who argue that the lack of financial transparency hinders effective planning and resource allocation at a time when the healthcare infrastructure is being pushed to its limits by the multi-province surge. The geographic expansion of the outbreak to eight provinces in the DRC illustrates the volatile nature of the current health crisis. As cases emerge in Kenya and Uganda, regional health experts warn that the window for containment is narrowing. The unaccounted $700 million represents a significant portion of the total mobilization effort, and its absence from the visible frontline response has sparked fears of systemic inefficiencies or mismanagement that could jeopardize the lives of thousands of people across the Central and East African regions. Moving forward, Congolese officials and the continental health body have signaled that future cooperation with international partners will depend on a clear accounting of past expenditures. Restoring trust in the financial management of health emergencies is viewed as vital for securing the continued support of donors and ensuring that frontline workers have the equipment and vaccines necessary to stop the transmission. As the outbreak continues to move across borders, the pressure is mounting on aid groups to reconcile their books and prove that the funds provided for the Ebola response are being used for their intended purpose.
