The University for Development Studies (UDS) has seen its quest to retain the West Africa University Games (WAUG) football title come to an end following a semi-final defeat. The Ghanaian side, which entered the tournament as the defending champions, was eliminated by Nigeria’s Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in a tense encounter that was decided by the narrowest of margins. The loss marks a significant exit for the UDS team, which had high expectations of securing back-to-back titles in the regional competition.
Throughout the regulation period, both teams demonstrated disciplined defensive play, resulting in a 0-0 stalemate at the end of the 90 minutes. Despite several attempts by UDS to break the deadlock and secure a spot in the final, the OAU defense remained resolute. The match subsequently moved directly into a penalty shootout to determine who would progress to the championship game, as both sides failed to find the back of the net during normal play.
In the resulting shootout, the pressure of the occasion was evident as both sides sought to keep their tournament hopes alive. Ultimately, Obafemi Awolowo University proved more clinical from the spot, winning the shootout 4–3. The heartbreak for UDS was palpable, as the result officially ended their reign as the premier university football team in the West African sub-region and sent OAU through to the final round.
The elimination of UDS represents a major shift in the competition's landscape, as the favorites exit before the final hurdle. While the Ghanaian representatives will be disappointed with the outcome after holding their opponents scoreless for the duration of the match, their performance throughout the earlier stages of the tournament had been commendable. The focus now shifts to the tournament final between the remaining contenders, while UDS will look to regroup and prepare for future national and international university sporting fixtures.
