The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has officially launched a staff provident fund scheme designed to bolster the financial security and retirement welfare of its employees. The initiative targets both subvented staff and those paid through Internally Generated Funds (IGF), requiring members to contribute a minimum of 10% of their basic salaries. By institutionalizing this fund, the university aims to foster a culture of disciplined savings and long-term financial planning among its academic and non-academic workforce.
The scheme is structured specifically to discourage frequent withdrawals, which often deplete savings before they can reach maturity. To support members' immediate needs without compromising their long-term security, the fund includes provisions for loans. Professor Samuel Essamuah Assabil, Chairman of the Interim Board, emphasized that regular contributions and prudent investment strategies are central to building substantial financial resources. The board's strategy involves managing the fund with a focus on high-yield opportunities to ensure significant growth for its members over time.
Speaking at the launch event, Vice Chancellor Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto highlighted the importance of early retirement planning, noting that the fund is a critical tool for ensuring a dignified life after active service. The initiative is seen as a proactive response to the economic challenges faced by retirees who may not have sufficient secondary income streams beyond their primary pensions. By establishing this fund, UCC seeks to provide enhanced social security benefits, ultimately aiming to improve staff morale and retain high-quality personnel through improved welfare packages.
