The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) at Takoradi Technical University has announced that its ongoing industrial action will not be suspended until the union receives a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) from the Ministry of Education. The association is insisting on formal written documentation of agreements reached during recent negotiations to provide its members with concrete proof that their concerns are being addressed. This stance reflects a strategic decision by the union to secure binding commitments before resuming academic duties.
Speaking on the development, the TTU chapter President, Prof. Frederick Boakye-Yiadom, emphasized the necessity of a physical document to confirm the details discussed in their most recent meeting. The core issues driving the industrial action include unpaid remuneration, general conditions of service, and specific requirements concerning PhD qualifications for technical university lecturers. Prof. Boakye-Yiadom indicated that while the union’s leadership and members are prepared to return to the classroom, they require the signed agreement to ‘quell doubts’ and ensure the government follows through on its promises.
The continuation of the strike poses ongoing challenges to the academic schedule at Takoradi Technical University, as lecturers remain firm in their demand for a binding timeline for implementation. By requesting an MoU, TUTAG aims to prevent future disputes and move beyond verbal assurances that have characterized previous negotiations. Until the Ministry of Education provides the requested documentation, academic activities at the institution will remain suspended, leaving the next steps in the hands of government negotiators.
