Tesla is set to wind down production of its Cybertruck at its Texas factory by mid-2027 as the company shifts its strategic focus toward the Cybercab, a dedicated autonomous ride-share vehicle. This decision follows a period of significant production challenges and sales figures that have fallen far below the company's initial expectations. While the Cybertruck was once a centerpiece of Tesla's future lineup, the company is now prioritizing its position in the competitive autonomous vehicle market.
The Cybertruck has struggled with numerous design and manufacturing hurdles since its launch, leading to multiple recalls and legal challenges. Although CEO Elon Musk has described the vehicle as one of Tesla's best products, he has also acknowledged the need for more affordable pricing to achieve mass-market success. The performance data reveals a stark gap between projection and reality; while Tesla initially aimed for 250,000 annual sales, the company recorded only approximately 20,000 units sold in 2024. Lead engineer Wes Morrill has also hinted at a potential discontinuation as the company evaluates its long-term manufacturing goals.
In place of the pickup, Tesla is ramping up its focus on the Cybercab, a two-passenger autonomous vehicle designed for various errands and ride-hailing services. Production on aspects of the Cybercab platform reportedly began as early as July 2023. By phasing out the Cybertruck, Tesla intends to free up manufacturing capacity at its Texas facility to support the high-volume production required for a viable autonomous ride-share fleet.
This shift represents a major pivot in Tesla’s product strategy, moving away from the niche, high-concept design of the Cybertruck toward a utility-focused autonomous future. While the transition marks the end of the road for the current Cybertruck production cycle, it highlights Tesla's commitment to leading the emerging robotaxi industry. The company now faces the task of proving that its autonomous technology can deliver the commercial success that eluded its stainless-steel pickup truck.
