Former associates of the late Ghanaian hiplife icon Terry Bonchaka have come forward with new and sometimes conflicting accounts regarding the circumstances of his death in 2003. Speaking on Class 91.3 FM, the artist's former manager, Reagan Mends, along with musician Nii Tebil and event organiser Paa Kwesi Ackom, provided fresh perspectives on the tragic road accident that ended the "Pulele" hitmaker's career at its peak. The discussions shed light on both spiritual premonitions and the technical state of the vehicle involved in the crash.
Reagan Mends, who managed Bonchaka during his rise to fame, made several striking assertions, including the claim that he had a premonition of the singer's early passing. Mends recounted a "chilling warning" from musician-turned-pastor Lord Kenya, which led him to believe the death was somewhat predictable. He further described an eerie experience on the night of the accident, October 30, 2003, claiming he felt a tap on his shoulder and sensed a premonition while praying for his team, only to learn later that Bonchaka had died at that very moment.
The technical details of the crash also came under scrutiny during the interviews. Musician Nii Tebil suggested that Bonchaka might not have been behind the wheel of the vintage Morris Coupe convertible when it crashed. According to Tebil, the car was an antique in need of repairs, and he claimed Bonchaka was in the passenger seat, contrary to official reports. However, event organiser Paa Kwesi Ackom provided a different sequence of events. While acknowledging that he had warned Bonchaka to take a bus and even offered higher fees to ensure he didn't drive, Ackom stated that the artist remained adamant. He noted that although a companion initially drove, Bonchaka eventually took over the steering wheel and crashed while attempting to overtake a taxi.
These new revelations highlight the enduring interest in Terry Bonchaka’s legacy more than two decades after his passing. Known for his unique stage presence, signature fashion, and vibrant style, Bonchaka remains a pivotal figure in the evolution of hiplife. While the varying accounts from his former associates offer a more complex and sometimes chaotic picture of his final hours, they underscore the profound impact his sudden death had on the Ghanaian music industry and his inner circle.
