Ghanaian swimmer Tamba Akin Boamah has etched his name into the national record books after a stellar performance at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. Competing in the Men’s 50m Breaststroke, Boamah clocked a remarkable time of 30.27 seconds. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Ghanaian swimming on the international stage, especially as it occurred during the first-ever Olympic event hosted on the African continent.
Boamah’s performance eclipsed the previous national record held by Harry Stacey, which had stood since 2024. The young athlete's success in Dakar highlights the growing competitive edge of Ghana's swimming program and the effectiveness of recent development efforts. He is part of a larger Ghanaian contingent of 13 athletes participating in these Games, with swimming being particularly well-represented this year by a team of four competitors.
The record-breaking swim by Boamah adds to the positive momentum for Team Ghana in Senegal. Alongside his achievement, fellow swimmer Jada Yankey also recorded a personal best in her respective competition, signaling a strong overall showing for the nation’s youth aquatic talent. This marks Ghana’s fourth appearance at the Youth Olympic Games, following previous participations in Singapore (2010), Nanjing (2014), and Buenos Aires (2018).
As the Dakar 2026 Games continue, Boamah’s record-setting feat serves as a beacon of inspiration for the remaining Ghanaian athletes across various disciplines. The competition in Dakar provides a historic platform for African athletes to showcase their talents on home soil, and Boamah’s new national record underscores the potential for Ghanaian sports to reach new heights on the global stage.
