Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), has announced that strategic interventions by the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Gold Board have successfully improved access to foreign exchange for petroleum importers. This development marks a critical step in stabilizing the downstream petroleum sector by reducing the impact of currency volatility on the cost of importing refined products. According to the NPA chief, the collaborative efforts between the central bank and the gold regulator have ensured a more reliable supply of dollars to bulk oil distribution companies, which is essential for maintaining consistent fuel availability.
Further enhancing these efforts, the government has authorized the temporary suspension of the GH₵1 Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy. This suspension, which applies specifically to the months of October and November, is intended to serve as a fiscal buffer for Ghanaian consumers. By removing this specific levy from the price build-up, the authorities hope to offset some of the inflationary pressures caused by rising global oil prices, which have historically dictated the cost of fuel at local pumps across the country.
The NPA also highlighted the outcome of a recent stakeholder engagement led by the Minister for Energy. During this meeting, local refineries reached a significant agreement on price stabilization measures. This consensus among the refineries is expected to streamline domestic pricing and prevent arbitrary hikes that could disrupt the economy. The CEO noted that these measures are part of a broader strategy under the current administration to manage the energy sector more efficiently and provide immediate relief to the motoring public and businesses alike.
As international crude oil prices remain subject to global geopolitical shifts, these domestic interventions provide a temporary but vital shield for the Ghanaian economy. The NPA has indicated that it will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana to monitor the effectiveness of these policies. While the levy suspension is currently scheduled for a two-month period, the long-term success of the forex interventions will be a key factor in future adjustments to the national fuel pricing formula.
