SpaceX has reached a $40 billion financing agreement with an affiliate of Apollo Global Management to procure and lease back advanced artificial intelligence chips and server hardware. The arrangement, confirmed by CEO Elon Musk, is designed to fuel the massive computing power required for the company’s long-term space exploration objectives, specifically its ambitious missions to the Moon and Mars. This strategic move highlights the increasing reliance on high-performance computing in the aerospace sector.
Under the terms of the agreement, the Apollo affiliate will purchase the necessary hardware and lease it back to SpaceX over a five-year period. While the delivery of the specialized graphics processing units (GPUs) and server equipment is expected to begin in early 2024, the lease payments are scheduled to commence in the first half of 2027. This structure allows SpaceX to aggressively scale its technological infrastructure while managing its immediate capital expenditure, which the company projects could reach up to $40 billion for the fourth quarter of the year.
The massive investment underscores the growing intersection between artificial intelligence and aerospace technology. SpaceX requires significant computing resources for trajectory modeling, autonomous systems, and complex data processing as it continues the development and testing of its Starship spacecraft. By securing this multi-billion dollar debt financing, the company ensures it has the necessary hardware to support its rigorous schedule of deep-space missions without the burden of immediate, large-scale cash outflows for equipment procurement.
