The Ghana Army has successfully concluded Exercise Thunderbolt 2026, with Southern Command emerging as the overall winner of the marksmanship and combat readiness competition. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Brigadier General Mark Alo, Commander of the 15 Armoured Brigade, praised the participants for their display of professionalism and tactical proficiency throughout the event. The exercise was designed to evaluate and sharpen the skills of personnel in response to the country’s evolving security landscape.
The competition focused heavily on marksmanship, teamwork, and the ability of soldiers to adapt to modern warfare scenarios. Brigadier General Alo emphasized that traditional military methods are increasingly being challenged by complex, non-conventional threats, necessitating a shift toward more integrated and collaborative defense strategies. The theme of the exercise centered on fostering a spirit of cooperation among various units to ensure a unified front against potential aggressors.
During the awards segment, individual excellence was recognized alongside unit achievements. Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Koli Emmanuel was named the Best Male Firer, while Lance Bombardier (L/Bdr) Acheaw Francisca earned the title of Best Female Firer. These individual accolades highlighted the high standard of technical skill maintained within the ranks, which General Alo noted is essential for the overall effectiveness of the Ghana Armed Forces in field operations.
Looking ahead, Exercise Thunderbolt 2026 serves as a foundational training phase for the upcoming Exercise Fire Blast 2026. The military command intends to use the lessons learned and the teams formed during this competition to bolster future operations. General Alo concluded by calling for continued commitment to training excellence, urging all units to maintain the momentum generated during the week-long exercise to safeguard Ghana’s territorial integrity.
