A series of tragic road accidents across Ghana’s major highways over the weekend and into early Monday morning has resulted in at least six fatalities and several injuries. The incidents, occurring on the Accra-Kumasi Highway and two separate locations within the Volta Region, involved heavy-duty trucks, passenger buses, and private vehicles, highlighting the persistent dangers on the nation's transit routes. Emergency services, including the Ghana National Fire Service and the National Ambulance Service, were deployed across multiple sites to conduct rescue operations and manage the wreckage.
The most recent and deadliest incident occurred at approximately 5:20 am on Monday, September 28, 2026, at Anyinasin Junction on the Accra-Kumasi Highway. A Toyota Voxy collided with a MAN Diesel trailer, claiming the lives of four individuals—three males and one female. Firefighters from the Bunso Fire Station arrived promptly to extricate victims trapped in the wreckage. While four were declared dead at the scene, one male survivor was rescued and rushed to the Kibi Government Hospital for emergency medical treatment. The collision caused significant traffic disruption before the authorities could clear the highway.
In the Volta Region, two separate crashes were recorded over the same period. On Saturday, September 26, a Hyundai H100 bus carrying 12 passengers collided with a Ford tractor on the Kpetoe–Sarakope stretch. Emergency responders from the Kpetoe Fire Station evacuated all 14 individuals involved to the Ho Teaching Hospital, where a male and a female passenger were later confirmed dead. Additionally, on Sunday evening, a Toyota Hiace struck a Toyota Voxy from behind at the Tsibu-Bethel Junction while the latter was attempting a turn. Though no fatalities were reported in this rear-end collision, several passengers sustained injuries and were treated at the Peki Government Hospital following a rapid response from local residents and the police.
The Ghana Police Service has launched formal investigations into the specific causes of each accident to determine if they resulted from mechanical failure, speeding, or driver fatigue. These recurring incidents serve as a sobering reminder of the need for heightened vigilance and stricter adherence to traffic regulations, particularly at highway junctions. Authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution and maintain their vehicles to prevent further loss of life on the country's roads.
