Award-winning Ghanaian filmmaker Shirley Frimpong-Manso is set to release her latest production, "Agency for the Dead," in cinemas nationwide on October 30, 2026. Produced by Sparrow Studios, the supernatural comedy will premiere at Silverbird Cinemas and various other screening locations across Ghana. This release marks a stylistic shift for Frimpong-Manso, who describes the project as a comedic departure from her typical work, drawing heavily on Ghanaian folklore and her own childhood memories.
The plot of "Agency for the Dead" follows the chaotic journey of two sisters who attempt to stage fraudulent ghost encounters to prevent their eviction. However, their scheme takes a terrifying and humorous turn when they inadvertently summon actual spirits. The film is part of "The 70 Slate," an ambitious three-film initiative spearheaded by Frimpong-Manso to celebrate Ghana’s upcoming 70th Independence anniversary in 2027.
The upcoming premiere has reignited a critical conversation regarding the sustainability of the domestic film industry. During a recent appearance on Joy FM's "Showbiz A-Z," actress Yvonne Okoro made a passionate plea for Ghanaian audiences to prioritize homegrown productions. Okoro criticized the tendency of local viewers to celebrate foreign content while neglecting high-quality Ghanaian films, urging a shift in consumer habits to ensure the industry's survival.
Echoing these sentiments, Frimpong-Manso expressed concern over the disparity in viewership figures, noting that Ghanaian films often struggle to compete with Nigerian content within the local market. She emphasized that the success of projects like "Agency for the Dead" depends heavily on physical attendance at cinema screenings. By encouraging Ghanaians to "support their own," the filmmakers hope to foster a more robust environment for creative storytelling and financial growth within the national arts sector.
