The Saudi-led military coalition successfully intercepted a ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi militia targeting the northern region of Riyadh. According to coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki, the interception took place as the militia intensified its offensive against the kingdom. This incident marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict, highlighting the persistent threat posed by cross-border missile attacks from Houthi-controlled territories in Yemen.
In addition to the missile directed at the capital, the coalition reported the successful interception of another ballistic missile aimed at the city of Khamis Mushait in southern Saudi Arabia. These operations were carried out by the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces, which have been on high alert due to the increasing frequency of Houthi strikes. Colonel al-Maliki emphasized that the coalition’s defensive systems were able to neutralize the threats before they could cause any casualties or damage to civilian infrastructure in the targeted areas.
In response to these latest attacks, the military coalition announced plans to conduct retaliatory strikes against the Houthi launch sites. Specifically, al-Maliki indicated that the coalition has identified a launch site near Sana’a, Yemen's capital, which is designated for destruction. The coalition maintains that these measures are necessary to protect Saudi civilians and sovereignty, following what they describe as a deliberate escalation by the Houthi militia.
The escalation comes amid the broader, protracted war in Yemen, which has seen the Houthi militia frequently use drones and missiles against Saudi targets. While international efforts for a ceasefire continue, the recent surge in aerial attacks underscores the volatility of the region. The Saudi-led coalition has reiterated its commitment to dismantling the militia’s capabilities while urging the international community to take a firmer stance against the group’s use of advanced weaponry provided by regional allies.
