Award-winning rapper Sarkodie has challenged Ghanaian business executives and wealthy individuals to provide significant financial backing for local music talent. Speaking on the "When We Sit" podcast, the artist highlighted a critical funding gap that hinders Ghanaian musicians from competing effectively on the international stage. He noted that while Ghanaian artists often rely on organic growth, their peers in Nigeria benefit from a more robust investment culture driven by the nation's billionaires.
Sarkodie pointed to the active involvement of Nigerian business moguls as a primary reason for the rapid global expansion of Afrobeats. He specifically mentioned a conversation with Nigerian billionaire Tony Elumelu, citing it as an example of how high-level financial support provides Nigerian artists with a distinct advantage. According to the rapper, this influx of capital allows musicians to take greater financial risks and execute large-scale projects that are often out of reach for Ghanaian performers who lack similar resources.
The rapper expressed concern that the lack of structured investment in Ghana forces artists to navigate a much more difficult and precarious path. While this results in a more organic development process, it often leaves talented individuals struggling to fund essential aspects of their careers, such as high-quality production, international marketing, and extensive tours. Sarkodie urged Ghanaian entrepreneurs to view the music industry not just as entertainment, but as a viable business sector capable of yielding significant returns and boosting the country's cultural influence.
By adopting a model similar to Nigeria’s, Sarkodie believes the Ghanaian music scene can reach its full potential and achieve sustained global success. He called on the nation’s business elite to bridge the financial divide, arguing that strategic investment is the missing link needed to elevate Ghanaian talent to the same level of visibility and commercial success currently enjoyed by their regional counterparts.
