Former Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo has officially declared her intention to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries for the Dome-Kwabenya constituency ahead of the 2028 general elections. Making the announcement via a statement on Facebook, the former legislator emphasized her commitment to the development of the constituency and her desire to regain the seat for the NPP. Her decision follows what she described as extensive consultations with party leadership and various stakeholders within the area.
Ms. Safo’s team is anchoring her comeback bid on her past electoral performance and her role in expanding the NPP’s influence in the constituency. Nana Dubin Kwapong, an aide to the former MP, highlighted that during her tenure, the party’s vote share grew significantly, rising from approximately 35,000 in 2012 to 75,041 in the 2020 elections. Kwapong defended her previous absence from Parliament, which had been a point of contention, attributing it to private family issues while asserting that her dedication to the party and her over 200,000 constituents remains unwavering.
The move for a comeback follows the NPP’s loss of the Dome-Kwabenya seat in the 2024 elections, where Mike Oquaye Jr served as the party’s candidate. Addressing the development, Oquaye Jr attributed the 2024 defeat to voter apathy and other external factors rather than a rejection of his candidacy. Despite Safo’s announcement, Oquaye Jr expressed optimism about the party’s prospects in 2028, signaling a potentially competitive primary race as the NPP seeks to reclaim one of its former strongholds in the Greater Accra Region.
As the internal party race begins to take shape, Ms. Safo has called for open dialogue among party members regarding the future leadership of the constituency. She framed her candidacy as a mission to continue development projects and provide effective representation for the people of Dome-Kwabenya. The upcoming primaries will test whether her previous track record and recent consultations are enough to secure the party’s mandate for a third non-consecutive term in the legislature.
