Sankofa Medical Charities, a United States-based non-governmental organization, has presented a significant donation of medical equipment to the Dialysis Unit of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH). The package includes fifteen mechanical recliners and four dialysis machines, specifically aimed at enhancing specialized care for kidney disease patients. While the items were received at TTH, the dialysis machines are earmarked for distribution to the Yendi Government Hospital and facilities within the Oti Region, addressing a critical gap in life-saving infrastructure in these underserved areas.
The Secretary of Sankofa Medical Charities, Dr. Al-Majeed Adam, emphasized that the donation was prompted by the urgent need to improve hospital operations and patient outcomes. During previous assessments, the organization observed significant overcrowding in emergency rooms and long waiting times for patients requiring dialysis. Dr. Adam highlighted that providing adequate medical tools is essential for effective healthcare delivery, particularly in regions where patients currently face immense challenges accessing routine treatment.
A key component of this initiative is the decentralization of dialysis services to make them more accessible to local populations. Beyond the physical donation, plans are currently in motion to establish a dedicated dialysis unit at the Yendi Government Hospital. To ensure the sustainability of this project, healthcare staff from Yendi will undergo specialized training at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. This strategic move is expected to alleviate the burden on the regional teaching hospital while bringing critical care closer to the residents of Yendi and the Oti Region.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the hospital, Prof. Alhassan Abdul-Mumin, the Director of Medical Affairs at TTH, commended Sankofa Medical Charities for their consistent support. He noted that such contributions are vital for the survival of patients with renal conditions in Northern Ghana. This latest gesture aligns with the NGO’s broader mission to provide medical aid and essential services to underserved communities across both Africa and Atlanta, reinforcing their commitment to global health equity.
