The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced a comprehensive plan to enhance telecommunications infrastructure across the Volta Region. Speaking during a two-day inspection tour of ICT facilities, the Minister committed to establishing new telephony sites and upgrading existing infrastructure to improve cellular signals by the end of this year or early 2026. This initiative is part of a broader government strategy to ensure robust digital connectivity across all regions of the country.
Before embarking on his tour, the Minister held a consultative meeting with the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu. During their discussions, Gunu emphasized the critical role that reliable communication networks play in driving the region's economic potential. He noted that the Volta Region serves as a vital hub for tourism, agriculture, and logistics, all of which require modern digital infrastructure to attract investment and operate efficiently. Minister George echoed these sentiments, stating that the planned upgrades are essential for fostering regional growth and ensuring no community is left behind in the digital age.
In addition to the infrastructure commitments, the Minister visited the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), where he presented 200 laptops to the institution. The donation is specifically intended to support technology-driven healthcare delivery and provide students and faculty with the necessary tools for digital research and clinical training. George highlighted the importance of equipping educational and medical institutions with modern ICT resources, noting that such investments are foundational to the future of Ghanaian healthcare.
The Minister's tour highlights the administration's focus on integrating digital technology into essential sectors of the economy. By prioritizing both hardware distribution and foundational infrastructure like telephony sites, the Ministry aims to create an environment where digital innovation can thrive. Residents and businesses in the Volta Region can expect to see tangible improvements in connectivity as these projects commence over the coming months, marking a significant step toward universal digital access.
