The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has officially launched the 2025 Girls-In-ICT Open Day, a strategic initiative designed to equip young women with the skills necessary to lead Ghana's digital transformation. This year’s program hosts 100 girls selected from the Volta and Upper West Regions for a five-day intensive experience focused on emerging technologies. Minister George emphasized that the initiative is a critical step toward closing the gender gap in the technology sector, urging participants to see themselves as the future innovators and problem-solvers of the nation. Throughout the five-day event, the participants will engage in a variety of activities including mentorship sessions, hands-on training, and direct interactions with prominent ICT institutions. The curriculum specifically targets high-growth areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity, providing the girls with a competitive edge in the global digital economy. The Minister highlighted the historical underrepresentation of women in tech fields and stressed that empowering girls in STEM is essential for achieving comprehensive national development. In his keynote address, Mr. George also focused on the importance of ethical technology use, particularly as AI becomes more integrated into daily life. He encouraged the girls to not only build technical proficiency but also to champion the responsible and ethical application of innovation within their communities. By acting as mentors to their peers, these students are expected to create a ripple effect, inspiring more young women in the Volta and Upper West Regions to pursue careers in science and technology. As Ghana continues to advance its digital agenda, the Girls-In-ICT initiative remains a cornerstone of the government's efforts to ensure inclusive growth. The program aims to transform these 100 beneficiaries into digital leaders who can contribute to the country’s socio-economic evolution. The successful launch of the Open Day marks the beginning of a week-long journey that promises to reshape the participants' career trajectories and strengthen the foundation of Ghana’s tech ecosystem.
