Samson Kwasi Awe Awiah, a former national team all-rounder, has been elected as the new President of the Ghana Cricket Association (GCA). In a closely contested election held during the association's recent congress, Awiah secured 11 out of the 25 total votes cast to take the helm of the sporting body. His victory marks a significant transition in leadership for cricket in Ghana, as he moves from his historical role on the field to the highest administrative office in the sport.
The election also saw the formation of a new executive team to support Awiah in his upcoming mandate. Samuel Nana Ekow Biney Asamoah was elected to serve as Vice President, while Angela Cassandra Allotey successfully retained her position as the Treasurer. The congress was attended by prominent figures in the sporting community, including the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Richard Akpokavie. In his address to the delegates, Akpokavie highlighted the critical importance of grassroots development and the maintenance of high standards of good governance to ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of cricket in the country.
Following his election, President-elect Awiah outlined his primary objective of decentralizing cricket across the nation. He emphasized that under his leadership, the GCA would work to ensure that national team selections are more inclusive, reflecting talent from all regions of the country rather than being concentrated in specific traditional hubs. This move toward decentralization is intended to expand the sport’s reach and unearth untapped potential from various parts of Ghana, aligning with the broader goal of making cricket a more nationally representative and popular sport.
As Awiah takes office, the focus will now shift toward implementing these administrative reforms and strengthening the association's internal structures. By prioritizing regional representation and grassroots initiatives, the new GCA leadership aims to build a robust pipeline for the national teams. The success of this administration will be measured by its ability to translate these pledges into tangible growth for the sport and improve Ghana's competitiveness on the international cricket stage.
