The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced new measures aimed at protecting underground fibre-optic infrastructure in the Volta Region. The initiative seeks to establish a formal coordination framework between road construction firms and telecommunications providers to address the persistent issue of accidental cable cuts. These damages have historically led to significant service outages, affecting both residential users and businesses across the region.
Under the new directive, all road contractors operating in the Volta Region are now required to notify telecommunications companies before commencing any excavation or construction activities. This early notification will allow technical teams from the service providers to identify and mark the exact locations of their fibre-optic lines. By synchronizing construction schedules with utility mapping, the Ministry intends to eliminate the guesswork that often leads to heavy machinery severing vital communication links during infrastructure development.
This policy change follows a comprehensive two-day monitoring tour led by the Minister to evaluate the status of various rural telephony projects. During the tour, it became evident that while digital infrastructure is being expanded, its reliability remains vulnerable to physical damage during road works. Minister George emphasized that improving the relationship between the construction and telecommunications sectors is essential for maintaining high network quality and protecting the state's and private sector's investments in digital technology.
The Ministry expects that these measures will not only reduce the frequency of internet and voice service disruptions but also provide a template for similar coordination in other parts of the country. By prioritizing the safety of underground cables, the government aims to strengthen the digital backbone of the Volta Region, supporting its long-term economic development and the successful rollout of rural connectivity initiatives.
