The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced a strategic shift for the One Million Coders Programme, pivoting from pure digital skills training to active job creation. Under the direction of President John Mahama, the government aims to facilitate 100,000 digitally enabled jobs for the program's participants within the next two years. This initiative is designed to ensure that the digital competencies acquired by beneficiaries translate directly into sustainable employment opportunities within the global tech ecosystem.
During a recent monitoring tour of digital coding centers and artificial intelligence labs in the Ashanti Region, the Minister revealed that the program has already established a significant talent pool. Currently, 10,000 skilled data annotators have been produced, preparing a workforce ready to meet the rising demand for digital services from international firms. Mr. Nartey George emphasized that the ministry is actively working to connect these graduates with businesses and international organizations that are increasingly outsourcing digital tasks to Ghana.
The shift in focus follows a specific mandate from President Mahama to ensure successful job transitions for all beneficiaries post-training. While the overarching goal remains to equip one million Ghanaians with essential digital skills over a four-year period, the immediate priority is bridging the gap between education and the labor market. The Minister noted that by addressing the concerns of trainees and assessing the capacity of regional training centers, the government is building a more effective pipeline for employment.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations remains confident in its ability to exceed the original targets of the initiative. By focusing on high-demand niches like data annotation and software development, the government seeks to position Ghana as a primary hub for digital services in Africa. The Minister assured the public that the program is on track to achieve its employment goals by the end of its four-year tenure, providing a robust foundation for the country's digital economy.
