Salem Kalmoni, the CEO of Japan Motors Trading Company, has shared the strategic framework and family history that have sustained his family's business legacy in Ghana for over a century. Speaking during an interview on Joy FM, Kalmoni introduced his "Six Bs of Business Success," a set of principles derived from 25 years of personal experience and the multi-generational wisdom of the Kalmoni dynasty. His advice centered on financial discipline, urging entrepreneurs to banish bad debt and dead stock, practice frugality, and prioritize strong relationships with suppliers and reputable brands.
Reflecting on the family's journey, Kalmoni traced their roots back to 1912, when his grandfather arrived in the Gold Coast from Lebanon to escape Ottoman military conscription. After decades of trading in Winneba and Swedru, the family moved to Accra in the late 1940s and shifted focus toward the transport sector and the cocoa trade. A transformative moment arrived in 1958 when the family secured a distributorship with Nissan, leading to the formal establishment of Japan Motors in 1962 and the commissioning of a vehicle assembly operation in Tema in 1965. Kalmoni attributed the company's survival to deep-seated family values, including cohesion, perseverance, and a commitment to collective progress over individual gain.
In addition to operational strategies, Kalmoni offered unconventional advice to the youth and aspiring entrepreneurs regarding education and succession. He encouraged young Ghanaians to prioritize engineering and technical disciplines over the increasingly popular business administration degrees. According to Kalmoni, technical expertise provides a superior foundation for leadership in industrial sectors, as engineers can easily pursue business qualifications later, whereas the reverse is often impossible. He also emphasized the importance of involving children in family enterprises from an early age, arguing that early exposure to business responsibilities is critical for ensuring smooth leadership transitions and long-term enterprise sustainability.
