The Russian Embassy in Accra has formally rejected allegations that it is involved in the unlawful recruitment of Ghanaian nationals to serve in the ongoing war in Ukraine. Ambassador Andrei Ordash addressed these claims following reports that several Ghanaians were allegedly drafted into the conflict through deceptive employment schemes. The embassy emphasized that while it is aware of the concerns, it does not engage in coercive or illegal conscription practices within Ghana.
Ghanaian authorities are currently conducting a detailed investigation into the matter, as confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. According to government reports, approximately 272 Ghanaians have been identified as having been recruited into the conflict under various circumstances. These cases include reports of fatalities and individuals held as prisoners of war, prompting the Ministry to seek measures to safeguard Ghanaian citizens abroad and hold those responsible for fraudulent recruitment schemes accountable.
Ambassador Ordash stated that the embassy is prepared to act if presented with credible evidence of unlawful conscription or fraudulent activities by third-party recruiters. He made a clear distinction between individuals who may have chosen to join military efforts voluntarily and those who were misled by fraudulent promises of non-military employment. The Ambassador indicated a willingness to pursue necessary legal remedies and investigations should specific instances of deceit or coercion be proven.
Despite the current friction regarding the recruitment allegations, the Russian Embassy expressed a continued interest in bolstering bilateral relations and security cooperation with Ghana. Specifically, the embassy pointed toward future collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts as a priority for the two nations. The situation remains under close monitoring by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as they work to reconcile the number of citizens affected and prevent further exploitation of Ghanaians seeking opportunities abroad.
