Ghanaian media personality Ruddy Kwakye has challenged stakeholders in the creative industry to stop the habitual inflation of event attendance figures. Speaking during the Climate x Culture Summit held in Accra, Kwakye argued that the practice of "massaging egos" through exaggerated numbers serves as a major barrier to effective policy planning and environmental stewardship. He stressed that the foundation of any sustainable event management strategy must be rooted in verifiable and accurate data rather than vanity metrics.
According to Kwakye, the lack of reliable attendance data has direct consequences for waste management and climate change mitigation efforts within the entertainment sector. When event organisers report false statistics, it becomes impossible for service providers and policy makers to accurately forecast the logistical requirements of a venue. This discrepancy often leads to inadequate waste disposal systems, resulting in significant environmental degradation at event sites. Kwakye noted that reliable figures are crucial for organisers to plan and implement effective waste management strategies that can reduce the overall environmental footprint of large gatherings.
The media personality further highlighted the need for the creative industry to adopt more professional standards in how success is measured. He cited the environmental initiatives led by the Afro Nation team at Laboma Beach as a positive example of how large-scale events can incorporate sustainable practices into their operations. By using accurate data to drive decision-making, Kwakye suggested that the creative sector could play a more significant role in national sustainability goals while improving the overall efficiency and reputation of event management in Ghana.
