Dr Richardson Commey Fio, the Head of Culture at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, has called on Ghanaian entertainers and creatives to use their significant public influence to promote responsible behavior among their fans. Speaking on the societal role of the creative arts, he emphasized that celebrities carry a substantial responsibility because their actions and lifestyles are frequently emulated by the younger generation. He cautioned that failing to provide positive guidance could lead to a decline in the social and moral fabric of the country.
The Ministry official highlighted that musicians, in particular, play a vital role in shaping social behavior and public opinion. According to Dr Commey Fio, celebrity status should be anchored by a commitment to good character, as young fans often view their idols as primary role models for their own lives. He urged entertainers to move beyond just producing art and to actively consider how their public personas and messaging impact the psychological and social development of their followers.
To ensure a more structured approach to youth development, Dr Commey Fio encouraged creatives to partner with various organizations to champion social causes and ethical conduct. He noted that the contribution of the creative sector is essential for national development, but this potential can only be fully realized if artists prioritize the long-term well-being of their audience. He warned that neglecting this cultural responsibility could have dire consequences for the future of Ghana, stressing the need for an ongoing dialogue about the social impact of the arts.
