Reggie Rockstone, the pioneer of the Hiplife genre, has issued a public response to fellow veteran musician Slim Buster following accusations that he has neglected the Ghanaian music industry. Expressing disappointment over the public nature of the dispute, Rockstone emphasized that veteran artists should resolve their differences privately rather than engaging in social media "beef." The reaction follows comments made by Slim Buster suggesting that the "Grandpapa" of Hiplife had failed to contribute significantly to the scene and had avoided one-on-one meetings to discuss the industry's future.
Defending his legacy, Rockstone reminded Slim Buster that he laid the foundation for the Hiplife genre, which other artists, including Buster himself, subsequently benefited from. He specifically referenced Buster’s hit ‘Masherita’ as part of the era that tapped into the movement he pioneered. Rockstone also addressed the claim regarding a lack of collaboration, stating that he could not recall Slim Buster ever contacting him for such a purpose. He expressed frustration at being drawn into a public feud with someone he has considered a long-standing friend for many years.
Using the phrase "OGs don’t beef," Rockstone signaled his intention to de-escalate the situation, asserting that professionals of their standing should handle disagreements with more decorum. He announced that he would no longer address Slim Buster’s accusations in the public domain, opting instead to focus on his work. This exchange highlights the ongoing tensions between veteran Ghanaian artists over their perceived contributions and the evolution of the music industry they helped build.
