The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has issued a comprehensive assurance to electricity consumers across the country regarding the upcoming meter audit scheduled by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). The regulatory body stated that it is taking proactive steps to ensure that the audit does not result in any unfair financial burden or technical disadvantage for the public. This intervention comes amid growing public interest in how the utility provider intends to verify the integrity of its metering systems and address potential revenue leakages within the distribution network.
As part of its oversight role, PURC has announced plans to review and simplify the audit framework to prioritize consumer protection. By streamlining the rules governing the exercise, the commission intends to foster clear communication between ECG and its customers, ensuring that the audit’s objectives are well-understood. The regulator is currently engaging ECG to finalize a protocol that mandates transparency and professional conduct from field officers during the inspection and verification process.
Dr. Shafic Suleman, the Executive Secretary of the PURC, highlighted the importance of public accessibility to information during this period. He emphasized that the commission’s primary objective is to maintain consumer safety and guarantee that the audit is carried out with the highest level of integrity. Dr. Suleman noted that the commission would monitor the exercise closely to prevent any arbitrary assessments that could negatively affect the billing or service delivery for ordinary Ghanaians.
The planned audit represents a critical step for the Electricity Company of Ghana as it seeks to modernize its revenue mobilization strategies and identify faulty or tampered meters. However, PURC’s involvement ensures that these operational goals do not compromise the rights of the consumer. As the energy sector continues to evolve, the commission remains focused on balancing the financial viability of utility providers with the economic realities faced by households and businesses across the nation.
