The Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) has conducted a specialized training program for representatives of its newly affiliated member organizations to enhance their capacity in negotiating Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs). The initiative was designed to equip labor leaders from various public authorities with the technical knowledge required to secure favorable terms of service while maintaining industrial peace across the public sector. By strengthening these negotiation skills, the union aims to ensure that workers' rights are effectively protected within their respective institutions.
Sponsored by the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI), the training brought together officials from several key organizations that have recently joined the PSWU. Participating entities included the Ghana Railway Development Authority, the Ghana Veterinary Medical Association, the Ghana Hydrological Authority, and the Water Resources Commission. The program provided a platform for these diverse groups to learn the legal nuances of labor law and the specific procedural steps necessary to finalize binding agreements with their managements.
Speakers at the event emphasized that a well-informed leadership is a critical prerequisite for successful labor negotiations. They noted that when union representatives fully understand the complexities of the CBA process, they are better positioned to advocate for fair wages, improved working conditions, and essential social protections. This strategic preparation is intended to minimize the likelihood of deadlocks during negotiations and prevent the kind of industrial unrest that can disrupt the delivery of vital public services.
This training session is part of a broader expansion and support strategy by the PSWU as it continues to grow its footprint within the public sector. As the union integrates more professional bodies, it is prioritizing the education of its local leaders to ensure they can manage both internal union affairs and external negotiations with a high degree of professionalism. Moving forward, the PSWU intends to continue providing these resources to ensure that all its affiliates are capable of navigating the evolving landscape of Ghana’s labor environment.
