Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma Nyabongo II, a veteran Ugandan journalist and state broadcaster anchor, has been officially crowned as the 13th monarch of the Tooro Kingdom. The coronation, held in Fort Portal, marks the end of a mourning period following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away at the age of 34 after a battle with cancer. Kijanangoma’s ascension represents a significant shift for the kingdom, as he leaves behind a distinguished career in the media to take up the mantle of traditional leadership during a period of internal division.
The path to the throne was marred by a bitter succession dispute within the royal family. Queen Mother Best Kemigisa contested the legitimacy of Kijanangoma’s selection, claiming that the late King Oyo Nyimba had a direct heir—a young son—whose existence had been kept from the public. However, with the alleged heir remaining undisclosed and questions arising over the late king’s will, a selection committee opted for Kijanangoma instead. The Queen Mother has publicly voiced her opposition to the proceedings, indicating that while the coronation has taken place, the rift within the royal house remains a pressing challenge for the new administration.
Despite the familial friction, the coronation received significant backing from the Ugandan government. State support was instrumental in facilitating the transition, with President Yoweri Museveni expected to support the festivities. The ceremony itself blended ancient Batooro rituals with modern state protocols, underscoring the enduring cultural significance of Uganda’s traditional kingdoms. While these monarchies were abolished in the 1960s and only restored in the 1990s, they continue to hold substantial influence over cultural and social development, even without formal political power.
King Rukidi, known for his years of storytelling and community engagement as a broadcaster, has pledged to use his platform to foster unity and discipline within the kingdom. His vision involves a modern approach to governance that respects traditional customs while addressing contemporary challenges. As he begins his reign, the primary focus will be on healing the divisions caused by the succession battle and steering the Batooro people toward a new era of development and cultural pride.
