Police in the Afadzato South District have taken a hunter into custody following the fatal shooting of a man in the Nyagbo Kume Forest on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Mr. Zebio, a resident of Nyagbo Konda, was reportedly mistaken for game while he was foraging for mushrooms in the early hours of the morning. According to local officials, the incident occurred at approximately 04:45 AM, resulting in the victim dying on the spot from gunshot wounds.
The Assembly Member for the area, Mr. Theophilus Doh, confirmed the tragic event and noted that the hunter was apprehended shortly after the shooting. Preliminary reports suggest that the hunter did not realize a human was in the vicinity while he was tracking game in the dense forest. The police have since initiated a formal investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the discharge of the firearm and to assess whether any negligence was involved.
The body of the deceased has been transported to a morgue for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death. In the wake of the tragedy, local residents have expressed grief and called for enhanced safety measures within the forest areas to protect foragers and farmers. Community leaders are expected to engage with local hunting groups to discuss safety protocols and visibility during early morning hours to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
