Peter Lanchene Toobu, the Member of Parliament for Wa West, has strongly condemned recent civilian attacks on military personnel, describing such incidents as a profound disgrace to Ghana’s democratic values. Speaking at the Land Combat Power Demonstration 2026, the lawmaker called for an immediate end to confrontations between civilians and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), emphasizing that the military remains a cornerstone of national stability and sovereignty.
During his address, Toobu urged all Ghanaians, regardless of their social or political status, to accord the military the respect they deserve. He highlighted the essential role the GAF plays in safeguarding the country and maintaining internal peace. The MP noted that the recurring reports of civilians assaulting uniformed personnel undermine the rule of law and the mutual respect required for a functional democracy. He stressed that the uniform represents the authority of the state and should be treated with appropriate reverence.
Addressing the nature of these encounters, Toobu pointed out that the military often exhibits significant restraint when confronted by civilians in various communities. He clarified that this professional restraint should never be mistaken for a lack of capability to respond or defend themselves. Instead, he argued that soldiers choose to hold back out of a deep-seated respect for the citizenry they are sworn to protect, rather than an inability to apply force. He warned that taking advantage of this professional discipline is both dangerous and counterproductive to the nation's security fabric.
The lawmaker's comments come at a time of heightened concern regarding civil-military relations in Ghana. By advocating for increased respect for personnel in uniform, Toobu aims to foster a more harmonious relationship between the armed forces and the public. He concluded by reiterating that a professional military and a respectful citizenry are both essential components of a thriving and secure democratic state, calling on community leaders to educate the youth on the importance of cooperation with security agencies.
