The Paediatric Society of Ghana (PSG) has demanded an immediate and impartial investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving 19 students at the Obuasi Senior High Technical School. In a recently issued statement, the professional body expressed deep concern over reports of exploitation and called for the swift implementation of measures to ensure justice for the affected minors. The society emphasized that the safety of children within educational institutions must remain a non-negotiable priority for the state.
The Society’s intervention follows emerging reports of widespread abuse within the institution, leading to calls for increased transparency. The PSG has specifically condemned any misuse of institutional authority that might be used to cover up the abuse or silence victims. They stressed that the gravity of the allegations involving nearly 20 students necessitates a transparent process that holds all perpetrators accountable, regardless of their position within the school or the community.
Outlining six key demands, the PSG emphasized the need for educational and law enforcement authorities to establish safe reporting mechanisms. These channels are intended to protect both students and whistleblowers from potential retaliation. Furthermore, the Society urged the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to prioritize the provision of comprehensive psychological support and medical care for the students involved, noting that the long-term impact of such trauma requires expert intervention.
The Paediatric Society reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the government and relevant security agencies to strengthen national child protection systems. By advocating for stricter enforcement of child rights laws and more robust oversight within schools, the PSG aims to create a safer environment for all learners across the country. The group maintains that the outcome of the Obuasi investigation will serve as a critical test of the state’s resolve to protect its most vulnerable citizens.
