Justice Pa Edrissa M. O. Faal, the Chief Justice of The Gambia, paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. This high-profile visit was aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and fostering cooperation between the Gambian judiciary and the Asante Kingdom’s traditional leadership. The meeting highlights the ongoing collaboration between West African legal systems and the integration of traditional authority in matters of national interest.
During the visit, Justice Faal and his delegation engaged in discussions centered on enhancing judicial cooperation between Ghana and The Gambia. Key areas of focus included legal training, technical assistance, and the administration of justice. The visit to Manhyia followed an earlier engagement between Justice Faal and Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, indicating a broader effort to align legal practices and knowledge sharing within the sub-region.
The Gambian delegation, which included the Chief Justice's wife and senior officials from the Gambian judicial system, was also given a tour of the Manhyia Palace Museum. This tour provided the visitors with insight into the rich heritage and history of the Asante Kingdom. The Asantehene used the opportunity to congratulate Justice Faal on his recent appointment to the highest judicial office in The Gambia, where he succeeded Justice Hassan B. Jallow following the latter's retirement.
The visit underscores the prestige of the Golden Stool and the importance of traditional institutions in diplomatic and legal exchanges. By seeking technical support and training opportunities from Ghana, the Gambian judiciary aims to bolster its administrative capacity. This engagement is expected to pave the way for more structured knowledge exchanges and professional development programs between the two countries' legal fraternities.
