The Or Foundation has revealed that the comprehensive redevelopment of the iconic Kantamanto Market in Accra is estimated to require an investment exceeding $70 million. The foundation, which advocates for environmental justice and sustainable labor practices, presented this valuation as part of a broader vision to modernize the commercial hub while addressing the systemic challenges faced by its thousands of traders. This estimate highlights the significant capital required to transform the market into a safer and more efficient economic center.
As a proof of concept for the larger redevelopment plan, the foundation has showcased an 80-stall demonstration project. This pilot initiative is specifically designed to improve safety standards and enhance the working conditions for local vendors. By providing a tangible model of improved infrastructure, the foundation aims to demonstrate how modernized stalls can mitigate risks such as fire outbreaks while offering more ergonomic and dignified workspaces for the market's population.
Financing for the proposed $70 million overhaul is expected to be synthesized from multiple funding streams. The Or Foundation indicated that the financial strategy could involve a combination of government initiatives, public fundraising campaigns, and private sector donations. This multi-source approach is intended to ensure broad-based support and sustainability for a project of this magnitude, which serves as a critical node in West Africa’s secondhand clothing trade.
The redevelopment proposal aligns with broader urban renewal goals for the capital city under the administration of President John Mahama. By transforming Kantamanto from a site often plagued by overcrowding and safety hazards into a resilient commercial district, the project seeks to safeguard the livelihoods of traders while improving the environmental management of the textile trade. The success of the current 80-stall demonstration will likely determine the pace and support for subsequent phases of the market’s transformation.
