OpenAI has officially dismantled two significant foreign influence operations originating from Russia and Iran that leveraged the ChatGPT platform to generate and spread anti-Ukraine propaganda. In a report released on Thursday, the artificial intelligence company detailed how these networks used AI to create sophisticated content designed to manipulate public perception. By establishing fake identities and organizational fronts, these actors attempted to distribute deceptive narratives on a global scale, representing a major intervention by OpenAI against the geopolitical misuse of its technology. The investigation into these activities revealed that the campaigns employed ChatGPT to craft several fake journalist personas and establish illegitimate organizations to provide a veneer of credibility. A key component of the Russian-linked operation involved the creation of a fraudulent think-tank in Latin America known as the Social Research Center (SRC). Through this and other false fronts, the operators produced and disseminated approximately 100 articles intended to damage the international reputation of Ukraine. The use of AI allowed these actors to produce content with high linguistic quality, making the propaganda appear more authentic to unsuspecting readers. The Iranian-led operation similarly utilized a network of fictitious journalist profiles to push state-aligned narratives across various international platforms. OpenAI's intervention included terminating the accounts associated with these operations and blocking their ability to generate further content. This crackdown underscores the escalating challenge of state-sponsored actors exploiting generative AI for information warfare. Moving forward, OpenAI stated it remains focused on refining its detection capabilities to identify and neutralise such influence operations before they can achieve significant reach or impact.
