Prophet Ebenezer Adarkwa Yiadom, popularly known as Prophet Opambour, has publicly supported Pastor Mensa Otabil following the latter's controversial remarks regarding the prevalence of fraudulent prophets in Ghana. The General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) recently sparked a national debate by questioning the integrity of many individuals in the prophetic ministry. Otabil's assertion, which suggested that a significant majority of self-identified prophets are "crooked," has triggered both endorsement and backlash across the religious landscape.
In a video shared on social media, Opambour affirmed Otabil's assessment, stating that the critique was rooted in truth and necessary for the Christian community. He emphasized that it is essential for the church to acknowledge the presence of impostors who exploit their followers. Opambour’s endorsement is considered significant as he is himself a prominent figure within the prophetic tradition, yet he agreed that the current state of the ministry suffers from a lack of credibility due to the actions of individuals who are not genuine men of God.
However, Otabil's comments have met stiff resistance from other quarters of the prophetic ministry. Nicholas Osei, known as Prophet Kumchacha, reacted sharply to the critique, telling Otabil to "stay in his lane." Kumchacha expressed discontent with senior pastors who use their platforms to criticize prophets while, in his view, engaging in their own questionable activities outside their ministerial focus. Additionally, Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah has previously countered such criticisms by threatening to reveal damaging information about Otabil, highlighting deep-seated tensions among Ghana's religious leaders.
The ongoing public friction has renewed calls for greater accountability and the potential regulation of religious practices in Ghana. Some observers have suggested the establishment of a National Prophetic Standards and Accountability Authority to address these recurring controversies and promote transparency. As the debate continues, it underscores a growing divide between orthodox church leadership and the charismatic prophetic movement regarding the standards of spiritual integrity expected of the clergy.
