Omar Farouk Osman, President of the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ), has challenged the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to take a more proactive role in defending media freedom and supporting journalists across Africa. Speaking at the GJA's 30th Annual General Meeting (AGM), Osman emphasized that Ghana’s reputation as a democratic leader places a unique responsibility on the association to champion the rights of the press beyond its own borders. He noted that the continent looks to Ghana as a beacon of democracy, making the GJA a natural leader for such efforts.
The FAJ President stressed that solidarity among media organizations is critical to overcoming the systemic challenges and threats currently faced by journalists on the continent. He urged the GJA to leverage its influence and institutional strength to foster a safer environment for journalism, arguing that a free press is indispensable to the survival of African democracies. This call for continental leadership comes at a time when various African nations continue to grapple with censorship and the physical intimidation of media workers.
Despite the significance of the keynote address, the GJA was unable to proceed with its official business as the AGM was adjourned for the third consecutive time due to a lack of quorum. While the association has approximately 800 members, the meeting failed to attract the minimum 80 attendees required to validate the proceedings. GJA President Albert Dwumfour expressed deep disappointment over the low turnout, noting that the persistent lack of participation hinders the association’s ability to implement critical reforms.
Moving forward, the leadership of the GJA faces the dual challenge of re-engaging its membership while addressing the regional expectations voiced by the FAJ. Dwumfour emphasized that active participation from journalists is essential for the GJA to fulfill its mandate as a watchdog for accountability and transparency. The association must now find ways to mobilize its members for the next scheduled meeting to ensure that the call for African media leadership is met with a strong and united front.
