Odorgonno Senior High School emerged as the winner of the Plastic Challenge, receiving a gold medal and GH₵8,000 at an awards ceremony held in Accra. The competition, which forms part of the Schools Plastics Recovery Project, involved multiple senior high schools in a collective effort to address environmental degradation through active waste management. Following Odorgonno in the rankings, Accra High School secured the silver medal along with a GH₵4,000 prize, while O’Reilly Senior High School finished in third place, taking home GH₵2,000 for their efforts. The project is a collaborative initiative spearheaded by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research - Institute of Industrial Research (CSIR-IIR), OmniBSIC Bank, and Ocean Tribe. Together, the participating institutions successfully recovered 1.5 tonnes of plastic waste from their environments. While the top three awards were based on overall performance, St. John’s Grammar Senior High School received a special recognition for collecting the highest volume of plastic waste during the competition period. The event also served as a platform to honor individual students who demonstrated exceptional commitment to sustainability. Dr. Richard Bayitse of the CSIR-IIR emphasized that the initiative aims to shift public perception by treating plastic waste as a valuable economic resource rather than a disposal problem. He announced plans to transition the project into a national plastic recovery network to strengthen recycling infrastructure across the country. Saviour Agyei from Ocean Tribe underscored the importance of the next phase, which will extend outreach to more schools and local communities. This expansion is designed to build a culture of environmental stewardship among Ghanaian youth and significantly reduce the impact of plastic pollution on the environment.
