A devastating fire aboard the Liberian-flagged cargo ship Ocean Melody in the eastern Chinese port of Qingdao has claimed the lives of at least 25 people. The vessel was docked for routine maintenance at the Beihai Shipbuilding Co. when the blaze erupted at approximately 11:00 a.m. local time. While initial reports indicated 20 confirmed fatalities and five individuals missing, state media updates have since confirmed a total of 25 deaths among the crew. At the time of the incident, 42 people were on board the foreign-flagged vessel, which became engulfed in thick smoke that was visible across the shipyard for miles.
Emergency response teams and local firefighters battled the inferno for more than three hours, successfully extinguishing the flames by 2:30 p.m. Despite the intensity of the fire, 17 crew members were safely evacuated from the ship. Five of the survivors were transported to nearby hospitals where they are reported to be in stable condition. Eyewitness accounts suggest the fire began during maintenance work, with many reporting dense, suffocating smoke but no significant explosion at the onset of the disaster.
In response to the tragedy, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang have called for exhaustive search and rescue operations and a comprehensive investigation into the root cause of the fire. This incident has raised significant concerns regarding maritime and industrial safety protocols in China, as it follows a recent shipyard explosion in Fujian province. Government officials have signaled that a nationwide review of shipyard safety regulations and maintenance procedures will be prioritized to prevent further industrial accidents in the country’s busy maritime sector.
