Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has embarked on a sensitization tour to the Ho Municipality to advocate for the "Mahama Cares" initiative. The program is designed to provide financial assistance to patients suffering from chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and other specialized conditions not fully covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Speaking during the tour, Darko-Opoku emphasized President John Mahama’s commitment to reducing the financial burden on families dealing with high medical costs.
The GMTF aims to bridge the gap in Ghana’s healthcare financing by supporting specialized care and the training of health professionals. Darko-Opoku reported that the fund is currently making progress in operationalizing its systems and improving infrastructure for critical health services. She noted that the initiative is a response to the empathy President Mahama feels for citizens who struggle to afford treatment for life-threatening ailments, urging the public to seek accurate information on how to access these resources.
During the tour, the leadership of the Asogli State voiced their support for the fund but called for strict transparency in its administration. Togbe Kasa III, representing the traditional area, highlighted that while the fund has the potential to significantly enhance healthcare delivery, it must be managed carefully to ensure resources reach those in genuine need. He cautioned against any misuse of the funds, stating that the resources should be dedicated to treatment rather than being lost to mismanagement.
Darko-Opoku concluded the engagement by encouraging communities to prioritize early detection and treatment of diseases. She noted that the GMTF would continue to increase awareness across the country to ensure that every eligible Ghanaian can benefit from the scheme. The fund is positioned as a critical pillar in the government’s strategy to improve health outcomes and provide a safety net for those requiring complex medical interventions.
